WEDNESDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES

Time of Fear

August 1, 2007 - 7:00 pm

This film is an excellent overview of the impact the internment had on the lives of the 16,000 people who were sent to two camps in southeast Arkansas.  A discussion will follow the movie

Unfinished Business

August 8, 2007 - 7:00 pm

Here is the story of three men who courageously defied the government and were separately convicted and imprisoned for violating Executive Order 9066.  It catches up with them 40 years later fighting to overturn their original convictions.  A discussion will follow the movie.

Going for Broke

August 15, 2007 - 7:00 pm

With archival footage and interviews with veterans, this film chronicles the achievements and the eventual impact of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a segregated U.S. Army unit comprised mostly of Japanese Americans.  A discussion will follow the movie.

Go for Broke

August 22, 2007 - 7:00 pm

This 1951 movie stars Van Johnson as Mike Grayson, the commanding officer of the 442nd.  It depicts the regiments’ prowess as soldiers and shows how Grayson’s prejudice slowly erodes as his respect for his men grows.  Several members of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team appear as part of the cast.

Come See the Paradise

August 29, 2007 - 7:00 pm

In Los Angeles in 1936, Jack McGurn falls in love with his Japanese boss’s daughter. Forbidden to see one another, the couple escape to Seattle. World War II breaks out, and Japanese immigrants must live in internment camps.like war prisoners.

The movies are free.  A suggested donation of $5 will be appreciated.  Light snacks and drinks will be available.

Professor Roger Buckley will illustrate the wartime experiences of Japanese Americans and discuss some of the consequences of those events for all Americans.  Professor Buckley is Directory of the Asian American Studies Institute at UConn.

The Art of Dialogue

Thursday, September 27, 2007 - 7:00 pm

Our presenter will discuss how to talk about controversial subjects – how to have a discourse on topics such as politics and religion.  This timely subject will relate racial issues now and those causing the internment of Japanese Americans.

One Thousand Paper Cranes

Tuesday, October 2, 2007 - 7:00pm

Takeyuki Ishii, the author of One Thousand Paper Cranes, will talk about his book and the impact the atomic bomb had on the people of Japan.  This program will be appropriate for families.  Childcare will be provided for young children.  This program will be held at the United Methodist Church on Academy Road

Children ages 5 and up will have the opportunity to create craft projects similar to those made at the internment camps.  Joan Pilarczyk from Artsplace has used the book The Art of Gaman as her basis for the craft ideas.
