Finding Books for Kids
1. How do I know if a book has something I think is inappropriate for my child? (Does this book have drug use/sexual content/bad language/etc.?) http://www.commonsensemedia.org rates books, movies and music for content based on a variety of topics.
2. Find book reviews through our catalog. Click on “Reviews and more” after you find the book. The reviews are the same sources that the librarians use to purchase the books and will mention a recommended grade level or age and usually mention any controversial content. You will often find the same reviews at amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/ under “Editorial Reviews”.
3. How do I know what books my child should be reading? (My child’s teacher recommended Level One books, where are they located?) or (Can you find books for my son? He is reading at a 7th grade level.) Staff at the Children’s Desk are thrilled to make reading recommendations for any age. The key to finding the perfect book is interest: if your child isn’t interested in the book, they won’t practice. But, if you still want to find books at a particular reading level we recommend www.scholastic.com/bookwizard.
4. NoveList can help parents find new authors and titles. Simply check the box with your child’s age group under Recommended Reads Lists on the NoveList main page.
5. Lit Kits: Can’t make it to or storytimes? Take one to go! Click here for more information.
